We are enthusiasts, not an institution. Our aim is simply to explain a wonderful and under-documented art form in clear English, and to point curious readers toward the performances, books and organisations that can take them further. Everything here is written for the love of the craft.
The site is strictly informational. We do not sell tickets, take bookings, represent performers, or accept donations or memberships.
Not affiliated with any performer or organisation
The Rakugo Companion is an independent editorial resource about rakugo and related Japanese performing arts. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or the official website of any performer, storyteller, school, troupe, or organisation. Where we describe the art of storytelling, English-language performance or balloon entertainment, we are writing about the craft in general, not about any specific individual. Names of classic public-domain stories are used purely for description and education.
Our editorial approach
We write for the general reader, not the specialist, and we try to keep our explanations accurate without drowning them in jargon. Where a Japanese term is genuinely useful, we introduce it plainly and add it to our glossary. Where scholars disagree — on dates, origins or attributions — we favour the mainstream account and avoid overstating certainty. Our sources are the standard reference works and the public cultural institutions we link throughout the site.

We especially value corrections from performers and scholars of the art. Because this is a small independent project, we cannot arrange performances, bookings or introductions — but we are always glad to point readers toward the organisations that can.
